Level Select (Game Gear)
When you see the SEGA logo appear, quickly hold Down-Left, button 1, button 2, and the Start button. Keep holding them down until you hear three chimes and then let go. If done correctly you will be taken to the "Level Select" area.

Level Select (Master System)
Plug in a controller into the second port of the Master System. Next hold Up-Left, button 1, button 2, and turn on the MS. Now keep hold those buttons down until Sonic finishes running across the screen, when he's done unplug the controller and put it into the first port. Finally press button 2 to display the level select screen.

Easy Lives
When you enter Sky Hill Zone there are two extra lives in the level. You can find the first one by crossing the bridge, jumping over the two sets of spikes, ignoring both the ring monitor and the spring, and finally jumping over another set of spikes to grab the first extra life. The second one requires you to back track to the spring you ignored, and use it to get to the horizontal spring, which you will use to get through the bricks. After this you will see two more springs, jump on the vertical one to reach another spring. Jump on that spring, and hold down the left button until you reach an area with pine trees in the background. Here you will find another extra life, once you take it go kill yourself somewhere in the game, and repeat until you are satisfied.

Continues
Every second act has crystals hidden somewhere in the level, which gives you three extra lives. When you receive a game over, and continue the game you will start off with three lives on the same level which you died on.
